A short summary of what to know, then 28 free practice questions with answers.
Industry, reform, two world wars and the post-war years, plus scientists whose work changed the world.
What to know
The Industrial Revolution transformed how goods were made, with machinery, factories and steam power. James Watt's improvements made steam engines far more useful. Towns and cities grew quickly as people moved to work in them.
Parliament abolished the British slave trade in 1807, and the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 addressed slavery itself in much of the Empire. Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, a period of industrial growth and social change.
The right to vote widened in stages. The 1832 Reform Act gave more men the vote. In 1918 some women over 30 gained the vote, and in 1928 women won the vote on the same terms as men, at 21.
The First World War lasted from 1914 to 1918 and the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. In 1940 the RAF defended the country in the Battle of Britain, and the D-Day landings came in 1944. In 1948 the NHS was founded and the arrival of the Empire Windrush became a symbol of post-war migration from the Caribbean. Scientists such as Charles Darwin (natural selection) and Alexander Fleming (penicillin, 1928) made discoveries with worldwide impact.
