Study for the Life in the UK Test, one topic at a time

Each topic has a short summary, key facts, the public sources we checked and free practice questions with answers.

About studying by topic

The Life in the UK Test asks 24 questions based on the official handbook. This page splits the material into 6 topics so you can learn one area at a time instead of the whole book in one go.

Each topic page gives you a plain-language summary, the key facts to remember, the public sources we checked and free practice questions with the answers explained. When you know a topic, move on to the next one, then put it all together in a timed mock exam.

Questions

What topics are on the Life in the UK Test?

British values and principles, everyday life and the community, the four nations of the UK, history from early times to today, culture, sport and traditions, and how government and the law work. Each topic has its own page above.

How many questions do I need to get right?

The test has 24 questions and you need 75% or more, which is 18 correct answers. You have 45 minutes. See what the test covers for details.

Is studying by topic enough to pass?

It’s a strong start, but practise under test conditions too: take full mock exams with the 45-minute clock, and read the official handbook, which the real questions are based on.

How long should I study?

It depends on how much is new to you. A few weeks of short daily sessions works for many people: one topic a day, then timed mock exams in the last week before your test.

Are these the real test questions?

No. The official questions aren’t published. Our questions are our own wording, written from public sources, so they show you what you know and what to review.

Can I take the test in another language?

The test is in English. GOV.UK explains the rules, including for people who want to take it in Welsh or Scottish Gaelic. See booking and test day.
